Class Handouts
Class No. 1
February 16, 1998 Class No. 1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gathering at the Soho Playhouse, we received 6 handouts:
-personal letter from Bruce
-Theatrical Index subscription form
-copy of Back Stage article on Producing
-Glossary of Terms
-Class Syllabus
-Class ProceduresClass will be recorded by BJL for future use. Will be downloadable via RealAudio -- a compressed sound recording technology
BJL also lectured for the Commercial Theater Institute and highly recommends that program. This class will take more of a hands-on approach, be more intensive, and look at a wider range of material.
What Bruce wants for the students is that at the end of 12 weeks to really know to produce.
Encourages us to find a project; check out the Broadway University website (www.BroadwayUniversity.com); and take advantage of all that is being offered, including:
· TeleClasses (no computer required, only a telephone) · Coaching · Brainstorming · Business Building
BJL plans to give us information, and work with us. Wants us to build a community. Class members may be your future partners or investors.
What is a producer? April had a wonderful quote on her desk, to wit:
<INSERT QUOTE HERE>
We are DREAM MERCHANTS....
BJL introduced himself and discussed what led him to producing, his passion for theater, and the building of Broadway University. Among other biographical highlights, we know that he has practiced law for 10 years, was mentored by Al Da Silva, taught by Marvin Krauss, offered free seminars at one time, worked as a talent agent, as a talent manager, and loves rock and roll and teaching. He knows all of Lenny Bruce's material, acted in LA, learned a lot by just doing it and making mistakes, and knew a lot of people "when".
Having to hurry up and produce something is NOT the way to do it.
Only a small group of people currently make their living by producing in the theater. Most do something else as well, or are independently wealthy. All have a gift for raising money.
You learn something from following each idea and lead that you have.
Currently Bruce is producing R&J in partnership with Fred Vogel and Roger Gindi. R&J is delightfully unique in Off-Broadway history in that in showed an operating profit in three weeks as opposed to the usual thirteen.
After our ten-minute break, the class members introduced themselves. What a group!!!
We went through the afore-mentioned handouts.
Prepare for next week's class by reading the new material on Underlying Rights and also the chapter in Producing Theatre by Donald C. Farber.
Under the heading of Marketing Yourself Shamelessly, Bruce announced that this class was oversubscribed, and a new session will begin on Thursday March 26th. Tell your friends!!
